Why Echoes of Chernobyl moved to VYKIX, and how VxShield checks forged DayZ traffic against packet structure, rates and player-session context.

STALKER: Echoes of Chernobyl moved from OVH to VYKIX after attacks involving traffic made to look like DayZ packets. For this RolePlay PvE community, we used VxShield’s packet and session checks to assess traffic beyond its signature. A packet can resemble DayZ without belonging to a player.
Our migration write-up described an improvement after the move. The work centred on checking packet structure, request rate and session state before passing traffic to the game process.
What a DayZ Packet Spoofing Attack Is
Packet spoofing here means forging traffic to resemble DayZ game packets. We do not know whether the sender forged the source IP address too.
A port number and a volume threshold give a filter little information about whether the packet belongs to a valid exchange. Checking the structure and session state provides more context. The contents, arrival rate and active controls determine how much work that traffic can create for the server.
An attack can combine imitation with a large flood. Keep packet classification and network load in the investigation so you can account for both.

Why Generic DDoS Protection Lets Them Through
Volume rules measure how much traffic arrives. A game profile checks whether the packets follow the exchanges the game expects. Which checks run depends on the product and its configuration.
OVHcloud documents a Layer 7 Game firewall on eligible Game servers, with profiles varying by range and generation. We do not have Echoes’ former configuration. For your own deployment, confirm the supported profile and the checks enabled on it.
How DayZ-Aware Signature Validation Stops Forged Packets
VxShield’s DayZ filter uses packet validation alongside session and rate controls. A matching signature is one part of that decision. The filter still needs to determine whether the packet fits the exchange it claims to belong to.
The controls handle different work:
- Packet checks apply bad-signature and size rules to incoming traffic.
- Session and rate controls check connection context alongside packet structure.
- Query caching answers supported DayZ A2S_INFO requests from the cache, reducing listing-query work on the host.
Packets rejected upstream do not reach the game process. The dashboards below show decisions and events across the VxShield platform; they are not measurements specific to Echoes of Chernobyl.
The DROP_GAME_QUARANTINE maximum is 220 million drops per interval. DROP_UDP_BAD_SIG counts packets rejected by the bad-signature rule.

Inside the STALKER: Echoes of Chernobyl Migration
Moving Echoes to VYKIX put VxShield’s DayZ profile between incoming traffic and the game. We checked the session and packet structure alongside the signature, so copying the expected bytes was not enough to pass the rest of the profile.
We no longer have an incident packet capture or bandwidth series to describe the exact payloads and traffic volume. Matched uptime and session logs are missing too, so we cannot put a number on the improvement described in the migration report.
The platform summary shows 144 ongoing events, 1,656 in the past 24 hours and 19,755 in the past week. The capture has no visible date.
