Free Rust Server Hosting: What to Check Across a Wipe Cycle
Compare free Rust hosting with running your own server. Check updates, world exports and the terms of VYKIX's free 48-hour trial.

Check file export before moving a world to free Rust server hosting. You need a way to take the save and plugin data with you when the offer ends. Then find out who handles wipe-day updates and what happens to the server while your group is offline.
For Rust PC, self-hosting, free tiers and trials each leave you with different work and costs. Compare them during an update, a busy session and a quiet period, then try exporting the files.
Check four moments in the server’s life
| Moment | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Required update or wipe | Who installs Rust and checks that the framework and plugins work after the update? |
| Busy session | Can the allocation handle your players’ activity within its CPU and memory limits? |
| Quiet period | Will the empty server stay running, sleep or need renewal? |
| Export or migration | Can you download the save, configuration and plugin data before you lose access? |
Facepunch schedules its 2026 PC updates for the first Thursday of each month. Read the release announcement for the time and required resets. Account for daylight saving when converting that time; a fixed US time window can put maintenance an hour out. Plan the work with the wipe schedule guide and Facepunch’s 2026 schedule.
Arrange a test around the way your group plays. That might mean a wipe-night session, a busy weekend or a private game at an agreed time.
Self-hosting: a free download with operating costs
SteamCMD lets you download Facepunch’s dedicated server with anonymous login. The server download needs no extra Rust licence, though players need the game. Facepunch gives 12 GB free RAM and 15 GB free disk space as a baseline and says larger maps need more resources. Measure your modded workload before using that baseline to size a community server. Your costs include the machine, electricity, internet and the time you spend maintaining it. Before opening it to connections, check:
- Capacity: test your map, plugins and player activity with the Rust requirements guide.
- Availability: agree when the machine needs to run and who will bring it back after a power cut or failed update.
- Connectivity: ask whether your ISP allows hosting and provides public reachability. Open the required services and keep access to RCON or Rust+ limited to what you need.
- Recovery: copy the world, configuration and plugin data, then restore them on a separate instance to check the backup.
Ask your ISP what upstream DDoS protection it provides. A firewall on your PC cannot keep an attack from filling the connection before traffic reaches it. The Rust protection guide explains which services and responsibilities to check.
A spare PC can work for friends who play at agreed times, provided someone takes on maintenance. Set admission rules and group preferences with the private Rust guide.
Free tiers: ask about the actual offer
Read the terms for the provider you are considering. Get answers to these questions before uploading your world:
- What is the offer’s duration, and when can the provider change or withdraw it?
- Which CPU, memory, storage and player limits apply, and what happens when you reach them?
- Will an empty server sleep, wait in a startup queue or require manual renewal?
- Who updates Rust, and can you install a compatible framework?
- Is export of the world, configuration, permissions and plugin data included, or does downloading them require payment?
- What protection and support does the offer include, and where are the limits?
Keep a copy of the terms. A successful short session is useful for checking play, but a requirement to stay available for a month still needs its own test.
The VYKIX 48-hour trial, term by term
VYKIX offers a 48-hour PC server trial. It ends after two days and does not include Rust Console Edition.
- Provide a valid card for fraud verification. There is no trial charge.
- The trial does not create an automatic paid subscription. Continuing requires a separate paid order.
- At 48 hours, service is suspended. Active data is deleted seven calendar days after suspension.
- Export the files you need before expiry; the retention period does not extend panel access.
- The trial can run on different hardware from the paid configuration.
- Galium Custom Anti-Cheat, RankEval, the starter static web-hosting package and Rust website template are paid-plan bonuses excluded from the trial. Those paid benefits have partner-account requirements and terms where applicable.
Read the trial terms and check the current Rust offer before starting.
Give yourself tasks you can finish within the two days: try panel and file access, load your map and play a session with the plugins you intend to use. Note the hardware beside your results. A full wipe cycle, long-term attack resilience and a paid configuration with different hardware need testing beyond that session.
Review paid Rust hosting and free 48-hour trial availability.
If you continue with paid hosting
The paid Rust plan includes file access for your Oxide or Carbon setup, VxShield protection and three same-server backup slots. The VX-BM-I9-14900K-OC build has DDR5 memory and NVMe storage. You pay per server, with slots and resources subject to fair use.
Keep a backup away from the host as well. A failure of the machine can affect both the live world and its same-server backup slots.
VXPanel supports scheduled force wipes, map wipes, restarts and maintenance for Rust. Review the task’s actions and backup before relying on it. After an update, check the framework and confirm that players can join.
Select the configuration and billing term that suit your group, then check the total, including taxes and fees, at checkout. If you are switching hosts, ask us to confirm complimentary, best-effort migration and seven extra days on an eligible paid plan. We will agree on the files and timing with you before the move.
Use your session results to choose the allocation and the maintenance work you want the host to handle. Keep the world export you took before the trial ended.
