Hytale failed to connect to server: authentication and UDP checks

By

Updated

Hytale checks: Startup (Build & mod errors); Authentication (Profile & storage); UDP path (Assigned endpoint).

Hytale’s “failed to connect” message doesn’t identify the cause. First check startup, authentication and the assigned endpoint. Find out which players are affected and compare their attempt times with console errors before editing files.

Open VXPanel and make these checks before changing settings:

  1. Is the server running? Inspect the power state and console startup output. For a stopped service, press Start and look for a crash or a startup that does not complete.
  2. Is authentication complete? Once the console accepts commands, run /auth status. The process can start before it has valid authentication to accept players. Use the authentication section below for a requested login.
  3. Does the address match? Get Server IP and assigned Port from the dashboard and include both in the connection address. The publisher’s default is 5520, but a hosted instance may have another assignment.

After those checks, find out whether the failure affects one player or the entire group.

Message or observation Record and check
“Server authentication unavailable” Save the error at the join timestamp and run /auth status. A running process can still lack the authentication needed for player joins.
The browser approves login; the console still offers profiles Finish the console’s selection prompt using the profile you intend to run.
Authentication is lost when the process stops Compare /auth persistence on both sides of the restart and capture storage errors.
The encrypted store reports an encryption-key or save failure Ask the host to inspect supported credential storage with that error. Another browser approval cannot repair a storage failure.
A timeout follows successful authentication Compare the assigned endpoint, UDP path, players affected and build versions.
Config reading or mod loading prevents startup Keep the startup error and examine the last file change before editing ports.

For a prompt offering several profiles, choose the number the console displays:

/auth select <number>
/auth status

Use the current choice in place of <number>. After web approval, the console can still need that selection. Confirm its outcome through status. See the publisher authentication reference.

One Player Can’t Connect, Everyone Else Can

Section titled “One Player Can’t Connect, Everyone Else Can”

For a single affected player, compare their build, account and network with a successful connection. Look at the console during their attempt as well: a whitelist, ban or account-specific server error can block one person.

  • Restart the Hytale client in full, then repeat the connection.
  • Compare client and server builds. Check versions and release channels. Where incompatible, use the supported client launcher or server update procedure.
  • Retype the address by hand to rule out a saved entry from an earlier server assignment.
  • Check local network rules. QUIC runs over UDP. Confirm that player firewall, VPN and network policies allow Hytale. Retain security software and ask the administrator about restrictions on managed networks.
  • Compare an allowed alternate network, such as a phone hotspot. Success there narrows the fault to the previous path or configuration without identifying the precise device or rule.

Log each attempt’s time and result so support can compare them with the server records.

Everyone Fails to Connect: Server-Side Checks

Section titled “Everyone Fails to Connect: Server-Side Checks”

Use the VXPanel console for these checks if the failure affects all players.

Where /auth status requests authentication, enter /auth login device and approve the current request with the account holding your Hytale game license. Use the device-verification address https://accounts.hytale.com/device. See the prompts and captures in the Hytale Game Server Setup guide.

For a failed login, check these details:

  • Read the active expiry. Complete the request within the time displayed in the console. If it expires, obtain another device code through /auth login device.
  • Check the selected Hytale account. If your browser chose an account without the license, sign out or select the licensed account in a private window.
  • Save the error. Retain the failure text and timestamp. Restarting over and over makes the sequence harder to investigate.

Prepare a backup and test while players are disconnected. Follow the setup procedure if login is requested. Inspect the authenticated state and its store:

/auth status
/auth persistence

If your service supports the publisher’s encrypted store, select it with:

/auth persistence Encrypted

Check the result for a save failure before stopping. Use the supported launcher or panel shutdown, let saving finish, then start the same instance. Read /auth status and /auth persistence after startup. Invite a test player once those checks pass.

Keep the pre-stop, post-start and player-join outcomes separate in your notes. If another login is requested, record whether the host or install path changed and retain the startup/storage errors. VYKIX managed customers can send support this record. Exclude tokens, device codes and credential files.

The publisher distinguishes game sessions lasting one hour from rotating OAuth refresh tokens with a 30-day lifetime. Sessions refresh before expiry; seeing a refresh in the log does not call for manual login. A server offline beyond the refresh-token lifetime can need authentication again. Leave a working session intact instead of scheduling logout.

Capture the first relevant error, then press Stop. Allow shutdown to finish before pressing Start and reviewing output. Ask support before forcing off an unresponsive process, because interruption during saving can damage the world.

If a config edit or mod upload preceded the fault, retain that change and its loading error. Stop the service and copy the current world and files before reverting. Where possible, restore the affected mod or configuration from a known-good backup and test one edit at a time.

Using Restore from Backups can overwrite more recent player progress. Verify backup contents and server-build compatibility first. If the restored state works, compare the changes between the two copies with the logs. The successful restore alone won’t tell you which change caused the fault.

Ports and Firewalls: What You Control and What You Don’t

Section titled “Ports and Firewalls: What You Control and What You Don’t”

Game connections use QUIC over UDP in Hytale. TCP port checks cannot verify that path. The official Hytale Server Manual specifies default port 5520 and the custom-port --bind option.

Follow the checks that match your hosting responsibilities:

  • Managed VYKIX Hytale hosting: keep the VXPanel-assigned address and port. If startup and authentication pass but joins time out, have VYKIX inspect the listener and host UDP rules, even if the panel state is green. Leave assigned ports and host firewall changes to staff.
  • Self-managed VPS or bare metal: align the bound UDP port with OS and provider firewall rules. If behind a router, forward that UDP endpoint to the server’s local address. The VxShield Firewall Guide covers provider-side settings; you remain responsible for the OS firewall.
  • Player network: use the single-player checks above to confirm the game is permitted. Connecting to a remote host does not require forwarding its server port on a player’s router.

To compare the work you would take on, read the VXPanel offer on the managed Hytale hosting page.

Download the Hytale change record and keep the status, storage, build and join results together.

Still Failing? Capture Evidence, Then Open a Ticket

Section titled “Still Failing? Capture Evidence, Then Open a Ticket”

If the fault remains or the console output is unclear, provide support with:

  • The server name and the time the fault began.
  • Assigned endpoints, client and server build identifiers, and a capture of the relevant Console error. Hide passwords, tokens, device codes and sign-in URLs containing codes before sharing.
  • Whether one player or everyone is affected, and the tests you performed.
  • For suspected routing faults, a WinMTR report from an affected player. It records probe replies rather than Hytale QUIC traffic, so don’t treat loss at one intermediate hop as confirmation of gameplay packet loss.

Contact VYKIX on Discord with those details and the recorded test results.
